學校創辦于1901年，是四川省早創辦的五所中學之一，初校名為經緯學堂（1901-1903），之后歷經彭縣高等小學堂（1903-1906）、彭縣中學堂（1907-1925）、彭縣縣立中學（1925-1949）、彭縣縣立**中學（1950-1951）、彭縣中學（1951-1952）、四川省彭縣中學（1952-1993）等階段，發展到現在的四川省彭州中學（1993-今）。2003年，原隸屬于學校的初中部剝離出來，創立了一所高規格的民辦公助的股份制學校----彭州中學實驗學校（http://www.pzsyxx.net）。
【基本情況】
四川省彭州中學位于彭州市天彭鎮南郊普照寺，占地面積220余畝，建筑面積11萬余平方米。學校現有高中教學班61個，在校學生4000余人；現有教職工262人，其中專任教師213人。教師中具有高級職稱的有67人，中級職稱的有74人。研究生學歷以上教師58人。
彭州中學實驗學校與四川省彭州中學毗鄰，占地面積100余畝，建筑面積3萬平方米。學校現有教學班49個，在校學生3100余人；現有教職工153人，其中專任教師127人，教師中具有高級職稱的有21人，中級職稱的77人。研究生學歷以上教師13人。
